I've been working full-time in the design industry since 2006. With the majority of that time in product development and wholesaling, I've developed special abilities with packaging and product design, but honestly I've tried just about everything. And if I didn't know how to do something... I learned!

Brochures, fliers & reports

Dense, technical documents like reports, manuals or capability statements can be intimidating and require confidence and precision to stay within legal or brand guidelines. I have a proven record of working within strict limitations to create accurate, engaging and easy-to-read formal documents.

      Books and catalogs

Early in my career I found an affinity for large, complex formal documents like product catalogs, utilizing Adobe InDesign's comprehensive styling and automation systems to make quick work of very large text and image files. At West Coast Gifts, I felt totally comfortable creating a 250 page catalog with codes, descriptions, prices and images for over 10,000 unique products.

An interior spread features infographic style elements describing the performance of the organization under the title "2016-17 School Year Metrics".
A photograph of a book titled "The Beginner's Guide to Bonsai". The photograph shows the cover of the book, featuring images of beautiful bonsai trees, as well as an open spread of the book featuring instructions on creating an "Informal Upright" style of bonsai tree.

          Packaging

Packaging is about as technical as print design can get, and often it can feel like solving a puzzle. The ability to visualize a flat design as a finished physical box, sleeve or wrap is something that I have developed over thousands of hours and hundreds of finished products. I also  have proven success ensuring legally compliant labeling, and love creating and customizing dielines for unique boxes

A photograph of the packaging boxes for a pair of knife blocks. The box on the left features a photograph of a wooden chopping-board style knife block holding five silver kitchen knives beside some bright, fresh cut limes. The box on the right features the "Professional" description and shows an image of a chef beside a photograph of the black, magnetic knife block holding five black-handled kitchen knives.
A photograph of two sets of small silicon storage jars called "Honey Jars". The cardboard-box packaging features a white and yellow design including lettering that resembles poured honey. The boxes also feature hexagonal windows resembling honeycomb, through which the product is visible.
A photograph of an early learning activity kit called "Preschool Academy: I Can Read!". The kit includes flashcards with fun games to help children learn the alphabet and a workbook with reading and writing activities. The packaging is in the style of a small suitcase and the design is bright and playful and includes a photograph of a happy boy using the items in the kit.
A photograph of a bottle of beer next to a full glass of beer. The bottle has a label which reads "Kleins 96 Craft Beer, IPA India Pale Ale" and features horse racing imagery. This design is also applied to the beer glass.
A photograph of a children's science activity kit called "Dinosaurs Unearthed". The kit includes fun science experiments and a book on facts about dinosaurs. The packaging features many colorful illustrations of dinosaurs and a clear window prominently displaying the contents of the kit.

              Product Development

Bringing a product to market is a marathon of research, sourcing, iteration and ultimately faith. I've been lucky enough to gain experience in every step, from ideating an original concept, through quality control in manufacturing, to sea freight, warehousing and retail launch. At Spicebox, I personally inspected and provided approval or amendments for production samples, carrying the responsibility for any faults.
A photograph of the box and contents of an instruction art kit called "Introduction to Paint Pouring". The box features photographs of abstract, colorful art made with the paint pouring method. An interior spread of the included book features a section titled "What is Paint Pouring". Other contents of the set are also shown including blank canvasses, paints, stir sticks and cups, paint thinning medium, latex gloves and a scraper.
A photograph of a collection of socks in their packaging.
A photograph of the box and contents of a coffee-focused gift set. The box features a beautiful photograph of a barista creating latte art and warm, art-deco inspired design. An interior spread of the included book features a section with information and instructions on grinding coffee. Other contents of the set are also shown including a collapsible pour-over coffee brewer, a set of paper filters, a pick/scoop tool and a pair of latte art stencils.
A collection of photographs of ceramic dinnerware featuring bright, fun and stylish designs.

                  Logos and Branding

While I was running my own business, most of the work I did was for small, local, new businesses. Getting them set up with professional branding, signage, business cards and often a website was an important way to signal to their community and potential customers that they were serious, trustworthy and deserving of their support. I made dozens of logos in this time, and was always happy to see my clients excitement that their business was finally real.
An image depicting a logo and stationery design for a pair of companies called "Glasswing Media" and "Colorbug pty ltd". The logos feature a stylized image of a butterfly.
An image of a logo for Sunnybank Hills State School. The logo features a sun setting over a pair of rolling hills.
A logo design for a company called "ISW Landscapes". The design is green and brown and includes an image of healthy green leaves and a tagline "Design, Install, Maintain".
An image depicting a logo and business card design for a company called "GA Group". The logo consisted of the letters G and A formed out of a pair of cubes viewed isometrically.
A logo design for a roller derby team called the "Terminal City Mix Tapes". The design has a bright, 80's inspired aesthetic and includes an image of a cassette tape surrounded by yellow, blue and pink lines, dots and squiggle shapes.
An image of a logo for a product named "Honey Jars". The name is presented in a script font and styled to resemble poured honey.

                      General graphic design

As a freelancer or an in-house designer you don't have the luxury of specialization. If something needs doing and you don't know how, you can't rely on someone else to have the skills so you learn. With this mindset, I've never shied away from a challenge and consider researching, practicing and learning a new skill one of my most marketable qualities. When it comes to design, that makes me exceptionally versatile and reliable.
A photograph of a billboard which reads "Save your money for beer. The Cambie 5 buck menu, now available before 6pm every day"
A photograph of a pair of posters hanging on a concrete wall. The poster on the left reads "Satisfaction with DJ K-Rec" and features a photograph of Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones wearing a pair of headphones. The poster on the right reads "The Friday Free-For-All, Acoustic vs Electric" and features an image of a young man playing an acoustic guitar next to a young man using DJ turntables in the style of a vintage boxing poster.
An image of two iPads, each displaying a marketing email. The email on the right shows a photograph of a vaporizer device perched on top of a pile of animal bones with the title "Ascent by DaVinci Skulls". The email on the right is for a silicon storage product called the "Dab Station" and features a photograph of an astronaut walking on the moon with the earth in the background.

A photograph of three magazine spreads.
A photograph of a young man holding a poster advertising tryouts for a roller derby program. The poster reads "Think you've got what it takes to be a roller girl?" and features a high-contrast black and white photo of a pair of women wearing roller derby equipment, competing against each other while smiling.
